This year marks the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly. To honor this milestone, the international symposium will highlight the evolution of business and human rights, including the changing landscape of expectations for businesses. We will
be joined by representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) as the keynote speaker, to provide insights into the role businesses should take to promote respect for human rights.
In particular, the symposium will focus on the role of finance to drive respect for human rights, and discuss ongoing efforts undertaken by companies to address human rights risks in overseas supply chains as well as those in Japan related to foreign worker rights in the run up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and beyond.

Symposium
“Education for Sustainable Development ESD in Higher Education:How does a University face the Challenge of SDGs”

United Nations declared Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. In Japan, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been promoted in schools such as those registered as UNESCO Associated Schools (UNESCO Schools). Primary and secondary schools are undergoing major curriculum revisions, enabling them to adopt more holistic approaches to learning for the 21st century. In the meantime, some higher education institutions have attempted to create cross-maintaining essentially discipline-based teaching. How does a university deal with the idea of a “sustainable society” proposed by the United Nations and engage students in learning in a meaningful way? This symposium provides an opportunity to reflect on these questions particularly from the perspective of social science.
